It’s deeply carved into the main Dolomite rock type and its geomorphologic development is strongly influenced by the presence of a major fault line.
Thanks to its floral and plant characteristics, this itinerary can be considered representative of the average amount of vegetable kingdom of the eastern sector of the National Park. The area is important for the presence of floristic entities spread in the eastern areas (black pine, Ambretta di Ressmann, Campanula della Carnia, Euforbia di Kerner, ecc.). With a little attention and luck you can hear and see a very high number of birds and other interesting species including the golden eagle and the black wood pecker. The presence of the lake can offer the opportunity to observe amphibians, the grass snake and, among birds, the mallard (which overwinters in the lake) and the gray wagtail.
